The Auxiliary Unit of Stratford holds joint monthly meetings with the American Legion, meeting on the first Wednesday of each month (except January) at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are usually held at the Shakespeare Center. The Auxiliary helps with the Legion projects--posting of the Avenue(s) of Flags and the two annual blood drives. The Auxiliary serves lunch following the Memorial Day service and after the First Day of School flag raising. They also share in the cost of the program for the 4th of July celebration. As with the American Legion, the members volunteer at school, work with Scouts, and help at Congregate Meals and with other Americanism, community and youth projects. Programs for the monthly meetings are planned jointly. The Auxiliary sponsors a junior girl to Iowa Girls State each year. The local school staff is remembered during American Education Week. The American Legion Auxiliary may have Junior Auxiliary members--birth to age 18. These young ladies learn about the programs of the organization and may attend a Junior Auxiliary Camp each summer. As with the Legion, the purpose of the Auxiliary is to support and care for the veteran and his/her family. One of the means of support for this is through the distribution of the Memorial Poppy just before Memorial Day each year. The Memorial Poppy is made by disabled hospitalized veterans. All donations received by Senior and Junior members of the units are used to aid the veteran and his/her family on the local level. In addition, the Auxiliary supports the VA Medical Centers in Knoxville, Des Moines, Iowa City, Omaha, and Sioux Falls, plus the State Veterans Home at Marshalltown. Three Mental Health Institutes and five Children and Youth Facilities are also supported by American Legion Auxiliary Units throughout the state. The American Legion Auxiliary organization is a chartered organization, chartered by the Congress of the United States. |
